La-Z-Boy – World’s Greatest Recliner

Coke. Kleenex. La-Z-Boy. Some brands define product categories. People order a Coke when they’ll accept or even intend to order another soft drink, request a Kleenex when they want a tissue. In the furniture industry, La-Z-Boy is synonymous with the recliner, inventing the product in a garage in Monroe, Michigan in 1927.

Today, La-Z-Boy still makes what we consider to be the best recliner on the market. The company also makes exceptional sofas and sectionals in both reclining and stationary styles. But it’s the iconic La-Z-Boy recliner that we’re going to focus on. Let’s explore a few features of La-Z-Boy recliners that are unique and unmatched by competitors:

Independent Back & Footrest

Most recliners require the footrest to be raised for the back to “release” or recline. La-Z-Boy recliners have an independent back – you can fully recline the back without raising the footrest. Conversely, you can raise the footrest without moving the back. This allows custom positioning of the back and leg/footrest.

Back Tension Adjustment

The resistance required to recline the back can be adjusted by loosening or tightening two wing nuts underneath the recliner. So, a petite lady can loosen the wing nuts to make the back easier to recline while a large man can tighten the wing nuts to make the back more difficult to recline, customizing the resistance to their frame and preference.

Three Position Locking Footrest

La-Z-Boy recliners have three distinct positions that lock in place until the hand wand is released and the mechanism disengaged. This prevents “clamshelling”, an awkward movement in non-La-Z-Boy recliners when you shift your weight in the chair causing the back to recline and the footrest then dips or collapses.

18 Ratcheting Positions

Once the footrest is locked, La-Z-Boy recliners offer 18 distinct reclining positions. This allows you to choose the optimal position you prefer, with the last position allowing the feet to be positioned slightly above the heart for improved circulation.

We haven’t even discussed La-Z-Boy’s industry-leading innovations. The P10 prefix allows for manual rocking then provides power reclining with the touch of a button. You can power recline either the back, the footrest or both. The 1HR offers all the features of the P10 (manual rocker with independent power reclining footrest and back) and adds power tilt headrest and power lumbar for customizable lower back support. Lift chairs, heat & massage, and wallaway recliners are a few more products we’ll discuss at another time.
